Indigo League, Episode 7: “The Waterflowers of Cerulean City”
Season 1, Episode 7, Original Air Date: May 13, 1997 (JP), September 16, 1998 |
Picking up where we left off, everyone is still on their way to Cerulean City. Misty tries to talk Ash out of going, even suggesting Vermilion City instead; but Ash says they'll go after he gets the badge in Cerulean.
Elsewhere, Team Rocket is hatching a scheme in a local machine shop to steal Pokémon, absconding with a large vacuum and giant hose for their plan.
The next day, Ash and Brock reach Cerulean City, but Misty has slipped away! Ash and Brock almost get mixed up with the local Officer Jenny, but they're able to clear things up thanks to Dexter and Brock's gym badge. After the two talk about strategy, Brock heads off before Ash goes to the gym. Roughly 21 years since I first saw this, I still don't know what he did.
Ash then discovers the gym has an aquarium, and the "Sensational Sisters" known as Daisy, Violet and Lily routinely put on water shows while their Pokémon are being healed. They try to give Ash a Cascade Badge just because, but Misty; the youngest of the four sisters, decides to battle Ash in their stead. Pikachu, however, decides not to battle because he likes Misty.
Ash sends out his Butterfree, and Misty counters with Staryu. Though the battle does take some creative license with the games, it does sport some relatively colorful animation for the time, and is a fun reminder of the days when the newness of it all gave the show a free pass to do whatever it wanted. Though Staryu does nearly do Butterfree in, Ash is able to rebound with the next battle between Pidgeotto and Starmie! Just then, Team Rocket crashes into the gym; using the stolen machinery to abscond with the water and all their Pokémon!

With some quick thinking, Ash is able to have Pikachu send Team Rocket blasting off and save the gym in the nick of time! Though not a conventional victory again, Ash is still awarded the Cascade Badge for helping save the Sensational Sisters bacon. So, we close on Brock regrouping with Ash and Misty as they all head off to Vermilion City.
Though once again a product of its time, "The Waterflowers of Cerulean City" is still a fun episode that I definitely still enjoy by modern standards. Though this may be a bit shorter than I was expecting to be, I will have more to you soon. Next up is "The Path to the Pokémon League!"
