Indigo League, Episode 6: "Clefairy and the Moon Stone"

Season 1, Episode 6, Original Air Date: May 6, 1997 (JP), September 15, 1998 (US)

Picking up where we left off, everyone is headed towards Mt. Moon; with an artifact known as the Moon Stone said to be a meteorite that crashed into the mountain many years ago being the subject of fascination with our heroes.

Just then, they all hear someone screaming as he's attacked by a group of Zubat! Pikachu is able to drive them off, much to the man's great pleasure. His name is Seymour, a scientist from Pewter City.

Venturing into the caves inside Mt. Moon, Seymour reveals that there have been lights strung up; which are having negative effects on the Pokémon inside such as Sandshrew and Paras! It turns out this is because there are thieves after an artifact known as the Moon Stone. Seymour theorizes that not only is it possible that Pokémon are from space, but also that the Moon Stone is the spacecraft that brought them here! This will be very interesting in future generations, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Just then, a rare Pokémon comes bouncing through the cave with a stone in its hands: Clefairy!

After Seymour talks Ash out of catching Clefairy, they all find out the source of the disturbances in the cave: Team Rocket! They're after the Moon Stone, and while Ash and Brock handle Jessie and James, Misty will help Seymour escape! Jessie and James send out Ekans and Koffing, and while Ash sends out Butterfree, Brock sends out a Zubat he caught! While Meowth slips out to chase Clefairy, the combined might of Butterfree's Whirlwind and Zubat's Supersonic blow Team Rocket out of the cave! As Brock and Ash compliment each other on their teamwork, they realize Meowth is gone!

Topside, Meowth tries to threaten Seymour and Clefairy; but Misty sends out her Staryu, who sends Meowth flying with its Swift and Water Gun attacks! As Ash and Brock ask if they're all right, Misty says they won't be bothered by Meowth anymore, "thanks to Misty the Mighty!"

After sampling some of Brock's Poké Chow, Clefairy leads everyone to another cave where the Moon Stone is held! Placing the stone it was carrying by the larger stone, a ceremony takes place among the other Clefairy!

As Seymour is in awe of what he's seeing, Team Rocket appears; then causes a commotion to abscond with the Moon Stone! Ash, Brock and Misty give chase as Seymour tries to talk to the Clefairy about their treasure. Also, I didn't know this when I was younger; but apparently Koffing can't learn Counter. So, in hindsight, I'm calling "HAX" on Koffing wrecking Onix with that.

Just then, all the Clefairy start popping out of the ground; and using their Metronome attack in unison, they trigger Explosion and send Team Rocket blasting off! This ends up destroying the Moon Stone, but the fragments that fall from the sky evolve some of the Clefairy into Clefable! Seymour then decides to stay with the Clefairy to learn more about them. So, as Ash spots some unflattering graffiti on a sign to Cerulean City made by Gary; we close on him making a mad dash to Cerulean City as Brock and Misty follow.

"Clefairy and the Moon Stone" is a decent episode by today's standards. While Seymour isn't my favorite character of the day at any rate, I admit that I like how Clefairy and the setting of Mt. Moon were used; and the animation is also very good for the time. I also remember reading the comic adaptation of this story in Nintendo Power back in the day; so even if it's not my favorite episode of Kanto, it's one that is definitely worth watching if you've got a half-hour to spare. Next up is "The Water Flowers of Cerulean City!" To be continued...
